To activate the NI SoftMotion Module, use the serial number you received as part of your installation package. If you do not activate the NI SoftMotion Module, you will have access to NI SoftMotion Module Lite, which provides a subset of functionality offered by the LabVIEW NI SoftMotion Module for free. With NI SoftMotion Module Lite, you can perform simple single-axis point-to-point motion, create motion applications for NI C Series drive interface modules, and connect to AKD drives through EtherCAT.Refer to the Activation Instructions for National Instruments Software for more information about licensing activation.Go to ni.com/info and enter nismpkg for a description of the different available NI SoftMotion Module packages.New Features and ChangesUser-Defined Variable Axis TypeThe LabVIEW 2012 NI SoftMotion Module introduces a new user-defined variable (UDV) axis type that allows a simpler interface between the NI SoftMotion host VI and C Series modules in LabVIEW FPGA Programming Mode.NoteYou can only create generic stepper drive interface or stepper drive and NI 9501 UDV axes at this time.Drive Interface FPGA VIsThe NI SoftMotion Drive Interface FPGA VIs allow you to implement an interface for communication between the NI SoftMotion Engine and the LabVIEW FPGA Module. These VIs work with the UDV axis type to provide axis configuration, motion I/O, and digital I/O information to be transferred between the NI SoftMotion Engine and LabVIEW FPGA, as well as implement a device state machine.Motor Control FPGA VI ChangesSeveral changes have been made to the Motor Control FPGA VIs, resulting in the following VIs with deprecated versions:
[*]PID Motor Control
[*]PI Position Loop
[*]PI Velocity Loop
[*]PI Current Loop
[*]PI Flux/Torque Loop
[*]Position Capture
[*]Position Compare
[*]Periodic Position Compare
[*]Pulse Width Modulation
[*]Spline Interpolation
[*]Hall Angle Calculator
The changes made for each VI are detailed below. If you are using a deprecated VI in your application, replace it with the newer version if possible.NoteThe deprecated versions are identified with a red X over the icon. They will continue to work in your application, but no longer appear on the palette. For new designs, National Instruments recommends using the new versions.New Digital Low-pass Filter VIThe new Digital Low-pass Filter VI allows you to apply the user specified digital filter to an input signal or signals on the FPGA diagram.Anti-Windup Improvements in the PI Position Loop, PI Velocity Loop, and PID Motor Control VIsThe NI SoftMotion PI Position Loop, PI Velocity Loop, PI Flux/Torque Loop, and PID Motor Control VIs provide improved anti-windup logic using an integral contribution (Ic) term that coerces the setpoint to prevent excessive overshoot in the case of output saturation.PID Motor Control VI InstancesThe PID Motor Control VI now provides single and multiple axis basic and advanced instances.New Position Compare and Position Capture Motor Control VI InstancesThe Position Capture, Position Compare, and Periodic Position Compare VIs contain an additional instance that allow you to apply configuration settings obtained from the Read Motion Memory VI to the signals.New Pulse Width Modulation VI InstanceThe Pulse Width Modulation VI has a new Single Center default instance. This instance was added to reduce FPGA usage in the most common use case.New Signal Changed VI InstancesThe Signal Changed VI has two new instances allowing you to filter multiple signals in a u8 or Boolean array.Four-Axis Instances RemovedAll four-axis instances of the Motor Control VIs have been removed. In addition, the Indexed versions are renamed to Multiple. To use these VIs with more than one axis use the Multiple instances which utilize FPGA resources more efficiently.Spline Interpolation and Hall Angle Calculator VI Connector Pane ChangesThe Spline Interpolation and Hall Angle Calculator VIs have reorganized connector panes. While the parameters are the same, the VIs need to be rewired if you replace the deprecated version with the new version.Offline Trajectory Properties and Methods ExamplesExample programs are now available demonstrating the properties and methods that you can use to generate offline profiles for prototyping moves or to send position points to the NI SoftMotion FPGA VIs.Axis Configuration Dialog Box ChangesThe Axis Configuration dialog box was reorganized to accommodate the new UDV axis type as well as provide for additional drive and motor settings. With the reorganization the following changes are made for all axis types:
[*]General Settings page

[*]New button image to better reflect what the page is used for.
[*]New axis types. The "stepper" axis type is renamed "stepper drive interface" and the "servo" axis type is renamed "servo drive interface." In addition, UDV axes can select "stepper drive" and "servo drive" axis types.
[*]Brake page used for enabling a brake output for motors equipped with a brake. This button appears on all axis pages but is greyed out unless it is available for the selected axis type.
[*]Motor page used for configuring stepper and servo motor settings. This button appears on all axis pages but is greyed out unless it is available for use.NoteYou can only configure stepper motor options at this time.
[*]Stepper page contains additional drive parameters available when axis type is stepper drive. In addition, the correction profile and position error monitoring settings are moved to their own pages.
[*]Monitor page used for position error monitoring for open-loop stepper axes with encoder feedback. These settings were previously included on the Stepper page.
[*]Correction Profile page used to configure options specific to closed-loop stepper axes. These settings were previously included on the Stepper page.
Fault Numbering ChangesNI SoftMotion fault numbers for AKD servo drives and generic devices has changed. Previously, AKD servo drive faults were numbered starting with 0106. Faults returned by the AKD servo drive now start with 006A. In addition, generic fault numbers have changed from 0101 to 0000.NI Example Finder ChangesThe NI SoftMotion examples in the NI Example Finder have been reorganized to move any examples previously in the "Customizing NI SoftMotion" folder to a "Device Specific" folder instead.LabVIEW 2012 NI SoftMotion Module Bug Fix ListYou can access the software and documentation bug fix list online.
