Uninstalling the Instrument Driver
Version 1.6 installs new combined NI-DMM and NI-SWITCH examples under \VXIPnP\Win\DMM Scanning Switches Examples when both NI-DMM and NI-SWITCH are installed at the same time.
Supported Hardware
You can find documentation for NI-DMM in Start\Programs\National Instruments\NI-DMM\Documents. Also, refer to the Where to Start document that came with your hardware. This document describes how to install and set up the hardware and software, as well as the software options.
Using NI-DMM interactively
To start programming NI-DMM with LabVIEW, launch Labview and open a new VI. Open the block diagram, and select Window\Show Functions Palette. Select the niDMM Getting Started example located in the Instrument Drivers\NI-DMM subpalette. To start programming NI-DMM with LabWindows/CVI, launch LabWindows/CVI and select File\Open\Project. Open any of the projects from \VXIPnP\Win\NIDMM\examples\CVI. These projects link to the nidmm_32.dll in \VXIPnP\Win\bin.
Programming in Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 or higher
To start programming NI-DMM with Microsoft Visual Basic, launch the Microsoft Visual Basic environment and select File\Open Project. Open any of the projects from \VXIPnP\Win\NIDMM\examples\VisualBasic. These projects link to the nidmm_32.dll in \VXIPnP\Win\NIDMM\bin.
Using NI-DMM with the NI 4060
[*]Launch Measurement and Automation Explorer from your desktop.
[*]Double-click Devices and Interfaces.
[*]Right-click on your NI 4060 instrument and select Properties. In the System window, note the device number that has been assigned. You will need to use this device number when you program your instrument.
[*]From the System window, click Test Resources to test the NI 4060 resources. A dialog box appears and indicates if the resource test has passed.
[*]From the System window, click Run Test Panels to run functional test panels. Connect your signal to an input channel on your attached accessory and select your Input Limits, Data Mode, and Y-Scale Mode settings. Your NI 4060 instrument immediately starts to acquire data.
[*]When you finish testing, click Close and then OK in the Configuring Devices window.
[*]When you finish configuring and testing your NI 4060, launch the NI-DMM Soft Front Panel from Start/Programs/National Instruments/NI-DMM. Use the NI-DMM Soft Front Panel to use your NI 4060 without any programming.
Using NI-DMM with the NI 4050
[*]Launch Measurement and Automation Explorer from your desktop.
[*]Double-click Devices and Interfaces.
[*]Right-click on your NI 4050 instrument and select Properties. In the System window, note the device number that has been assigned. You will need to use this device number when you program your instrument.
[*]From the System window, click Test Resources to test the NI 4050 resources. A dialog box appears and indicates if the resource test has passed.
[*]From the System window, click Run Test Panels to run functional test panels. Connect your signal to an input channel on your attached accessory and select your Input Limits, Data Mode, and Y-Scale Mode settings. Your NI 4050 instrument immediately starts to acquire data.
[*]When you finish testing, click Close and then OK in the Configuring Devices window.
[*]When you finish configuring and testing your NI 4050, launch the NI-DMM Soft Front Panel from Start/Programs/National Instruments/NI-DMM. Use the NI-DMM Soft Front Panel to use your NI 4050 without any programming.
New Triggering Model in NI-DMM Version 1.5
NI-DMM supported two types of triggering: Trigger and Sample Trigger. Trigger is defined as the start trigger that starts a finite or a continuous acquisition. Sample Trigger is defined as the sample clock that controls the conversion rate. In the old triggering model, Sample Count has to be set to 1 and Sample Trigger has to be set to Immediate. Trigger Count represents the number of points to acquire, one for each Start Trigger event. Trigger Source can be set to Immediate, External, or one of the TTL lines.
The New Triggering Model (Available in NI-DMM Versions 1.5 and greater)
While in the old model you had to set Sample Count to 1 and Sample Trigger to Immediate, the new model allows you to select any positive integer as Sample Count, and if Sample Trigger is set to Interval, it allows you to directly control the Sample Interval. The following functions were made obsolete in version 1.5:
ObsoleteReplacement
niDMM_ConfigureReplaced by niDMM_ConfigureMeasurement
niDMM_ConfigureMeasurementCompleteReplaced by niDMM_ConfigureMeasCompleteDest
niDMM_ConfigureStartTriggerThis function is not needed anymore, there is no replacement
niDMM_SetAutoZeroReplaced by niDMM_ConfigureAutoZeroMode
niDMM_SendSWTriggerReplaced by niDMM_SendSoftwareTrigger
The following functions were introduced in version 1.5:
FunctionDescription
niDMM_ConfigureMeasurementThis function configures the common attributes of the DMM. These attributes include the measurement function, maximum range, and resolution.
niDMM_ConfigureMeasCompleteDestThis function specifies the destination of the DMM voltmeter complete signal.
niDMM_ConfigurePowerLineFrequencyThis function configures powerline frequency.
niDMM_ConfigureACBandwidthThis function configures the AC minimum frequency and the AC maximum frequency attributes of the DMM.
niDMM_ConfigureAutoZeroModeWhen Auto Zero Mode is On, the DMM internally disconnects the input signal following each measurement and takes a zero reading. It then subtracts the zero reading from the preceding reading. This prevents offset voltages present on the input circuitry of the DMM from affecting measurement accuracy. When Auto Zero Mode is Off, the DMM does not compensate for zero reading offset.
niDMM_SendSoftwareTriggerThis function sends a command to trigger the DMM. Call this function if you pass NIDMM_VAL_SW_TRIG_FUNC for the Trigger Source parameter of the NIDMM_ConfigureTrigger function.
niDMM_IsOverRangeThis function takes a measurement value from a previous NI-DMM VI and determines if the value is a valid measurement or a value indicating that an overrange condition occurred.
niDMM_ConfigureTriggerSlopeThis function sets the Trigger Slope to either rising edge or falling edge.
niDMM_GetAutoRangeValueThis function returns the actual range that the DMM is using, even when auto ranging is on.
niDMM_GetAutoZeroModeThis function returns the Auto Zero Mode (On/Off).
niDMM_ConfigureSampleDelayModeThis function sets the Sample Delay Mode. Sample Delay Mode has the following meaning: 0 = Unset, 1 = Set. If Sample Delay Mode = Set, then NIDMM_ATTR_SAMPLE_INTERVAL is used as a delay after any type of Sample Trigger. This setting is not IVI compliant. If Sample Delay Mode = Unset, then NIDMM_ATTR_SAMPLE_INTERVAL is only used when the Sample Trigger is set to Interval. This setting is IVI compliant.
niDMM_ReadStatusThis function returns information regarding backlog and acquisition status for analog input data from the internal data buffer.
niDMM_FormatMeasAbsoluteThis function formats the measurement according to the measurement function, range, and resolution. It outputs the formatted data, range, and mode strings.
niDMM_ConfigureMeasCompleteSlopeThis function sets the Measurement Complete Signal Slope to either rising edge or falling edge.
niDMM_ConfigureSampleTriggerSlopeThis function sets the Sample Trigger Slope to either rising edge or falling edge.
Changes to the Documentation
Installing CVI 5.5.1 after installing NI-DMM 1.6 will cause the CVI installation to hang. A workaround is to install CVI 5.5.1 first and then install NI-DMM 1.6.
