LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit 3.0.1 Readme
    February 2007
The LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit 3.0.1 updates the System Identification Toolkit 3.0 to address installation issues with Windows Vista. If you already have installed the System Identification Toolkit 3.0, you first must uninstall that version before installing the System Identification Toolkit 3.0.1.
    Known Issues
    • The System Identification Toolkit 3.0.1 installer does not install this readme file to the labview\readme directory. The installer installs the System Identification Toolkit 3.0 readme file instead.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista, clicking an external link in the LabVIEW Help might display a JavaScript error while displaying the linked page. An external link is a link to a Web site or other place outside the LabVIEW Help. You can ignore this JavaScript error because the script has run already and the page displays properly. If Internet Explorer prompts you to continue running scripts, click the Yes button to close the dialog box and continue.
    • Because the default fonts on Windows Vista are different than the default fonts on previous versions of Windows, you might notice cosmetic issues, such as overlapping or truncated text strings, in VIs and LabVIEW dialog boxes. To correct this problem, change the theme of the operating system to Windows Classic in the Theme Settings dialog box and then restart LabVIEW. Select Start»Control Panel»Appearance and Personalization and click Change the theme to display the Theme Settings dialog box.

LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit 3.0 Readme
    August 2006
This file contains information to introduce you to the LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit 3.0. This file also provides you with help resources you can use while working with the toolkit. The file contains the following information:
    Overview
    System Requirements
    Installation Instructions
    Accessing the Help
    Finding Examples
    System Identification Toolkit 3.0 Changes
    Known Issues

    Overview
The System Identification Toolkit provides two tools, an assistant and a library of VIs, for developing models of a system based on a large set of raw data. Both tools enable you to complete the entire system identification process, from analyzing the raw data to validating the identified model.
Without prior knowledge about programming in LabVIEW, you can use the LabVIEW System Identification Assistant to identify and validate linear time-invariant models of systems from empirical data. You can load or acquire raw data into the System Identification Assistant, preprocess the data, estimate a model that describes the system, and then validate the accuracy of the model. The System Identification Assistant has windows in which you can immediately see the raw data, the response data, the estimated model, the validation results, and the mathematical equations that describe the model.
The System Identification Toolkit also provides VIs that you can use to preprocess raw data from a dynamic system, build a mathematical model that reflects the behavior of that system, and validate the identified model. The System Identification VIs enable you to customize a LabVIEW block diagram to achieve specific goals. You also can use other LabVIEW VIs and functions to enhance the functionality of the application. Unlike creating a project with the System Identification Assistant, creating a LabVIEW application using these VIs requires basic knowledge about programming in LabVIEW.
    System Requirements
To use the System Identification VIs, you must be a properly licensed user of and have the following software installed and activated on the host computer.
    • LabVIEW 8.2, Full or Professional Development Systems
You can install the System Identification Assistant without installing LabVIEW 8.2 on the host computer. However, to convert projects created with the System Identification Assistant into LabVIEW block diagrams, you must have LabVIEW 8.2 installed on the host computer.
    Installation Instructions
Complete the following steps to install the System Identification Toolkit.
    • Insert the System Identification Toolkit CD.
    • Run the setup.exe program.
    • Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
    Accessing the Help
Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible by selecting Help»Search the LabVIEW Help from the pull-down menu in LabVIEW, for information about the System Identification VIs.
Refer to the LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit User Manual for conceptual information about using the System Identification Toolkit. Open this manual by selecting Start»Programs»National Instruments»LabVIEW 8.2»LabVIEW Manuals and opening SI_User_Manual.pdf or by navigating to the labview\manuals directory and opening SI_User_Manual.pdf.
Refer to the LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit Algorithm References manual for information about algorithms implemented in the System Identification Toolkit and their corresponding references. The LabVIEW System Identification Toolkit Algorithm References manual (SIreference.pdf) is located in the labview\manuals directory.
Refer to the NI Express Workbench Help, accessible by selecting Help»Express Workbench Help from the pull-down menu in the NI Express Workbench, for information about the System Identification Assistant. The NI Express Workbench Help includes reference information about the System Identification steps and a tutorial that helps you familiarize yourself with the System Identification Assistant.
    Finding Examples
You can access the examples for the System Identification Toolkit by selecting Help»Find Examples to display the NI Example Finder and then navigating to the Toolkits and Modules»System Identification folder. You also can click the Find Examples link in the Examples section of the Getting Started window to display the NI Example Finder. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.
You also can find the examples for the System Identification Toolkit in the labview\examples\System Identification directory.
Example projects for the System Identification Assistant are located in the National Instruments\ExpressWorkbench\System Identification Assistant\Examples folder.
Refer to the National Instruments Web site at ni.com/info and enter the info code exfmsi for more examples of using the System Identification Toolkit.
    System Identification Toolkit 3.0 Changes
    • In the System Identification Toolkit 2.0 and earlier, the Zero-Pole-Gain instance of the SI Get Coefficients from System Model VI returns the static gain of the model. In the System Identification Toolkit 3.0, the Zero-Pole-Gain instance of the SI Get Coefficients from System Model VI returns the transfer function gain of the model instead.
    • The System Identification Toolkit 3.0 refers to pole-zero models as zero-pole-gain models.
    • In the System Identification Toolkit 2.0 and earlier, you launch the System Identification Assistant by selecting Start»Programs»National Instruments»System Identification Assistant»System Identification Assistant. To launch the System Identification Assistant from LabVIEW, select Tools»System Identification Toolkit»Launch System Identification Assistant.

In the System Identification Toolkit 3.0, you launch the System Identification Assistant by selecting Start»Programs»National Instruments»Control Design and Simulation»System Identification Assistant. To launch the System Identification Assistant from LabVIEW, select Tools»Control Design and Simulation»Launch System Identification Assistant.
    Known Issues
Some of the example projects for the System Identification Assistant contain a User-Defined Step, which relies on data that is unavailable until you run the project once. Some of the steps in the projects display errors until you manually run these example projects once.
